Overcoming Milwaukee!

Submitted by: Fred Maypark

Fred Maypark’s journey is one of extraordinary resilience, creativity, and dedication to community. Growing up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Fred embraced both the artistic and scientific sides of his Gemini personality. Inspired by early experiences at his junior high’s Junior Academy of Medicine, he once dreamed of a medical career. However, without a gay male role model to guide him, that path eventually faded.

At 28, Fred moved to California and discovered a natural talent for jewelry while working in retail. His passion led him to become a gemologist, and his career flourished in Beverly Hills, where he served elite clients including Lana Turner, Robin Williams, Anne Bancroft, and the Sultan of Brunei.

In 1994, Fred’s life changed dramatically when his partner fell ill and revealed his HIV status. Fred learned he too was HIV-positive. After his partner’s passing, Fred returned to Milwaukee and began immunotherapy with renowned immunologist Dr. Burton Waisbren Sr. He continued traveling between Milwaukee and California every six months for treatment. An immunological aggressive approach worked for Fred for 10 years before requiring traditional medicine. Fred has been thriving for 32 years.

Following his diagnosis, Fred’s life blossomed. He met Dalton, his partner of nearly 30 years, pursued studies in hypnotherapy and comparative religion, and became certified to officiate weddings.

In 2018, Fred and Dalton relocated to Palm Springs, where Fred began volunteering with the Inland Empire HIV Planning Council. Then in 2024, Fred joined the DAP Community Advisory Board (CAB) and the California Planning Group (CPG) California Department of Public Health State Office of AIDS – where he currently serves as youth co-chair.

Fred’s journey has also been shaped by profound loss—his mother and brother both died by suicide. These tragedies deepened his commitment to advocacy and strengthened his personal fight to stay alive.

Fred credits his longevity and health to the consistent care he receives at DAP Health. “Dr. Vu has been wonderful, and Cory Lujan has been extraordinary with insurance issues.”

He also values the resources and education DAP Health provides, including disability presentations through the Wellness Department.

In addition to his volunteer work, Fred has contributed artistically to DAP Health, designing a holiday card that showcased his creative talents. When he’s not volunteering or creating art, Fred stays informed through GAYUSATV.org, a resource he recommends for updates on HIV funding and advocacy.

“Be your own best health advocate.”
